October 5, 1944
Since September 9th things have been pretty dull but not altogether unbearable. The invasions I expected of Palau and also Moratoria were carried out according to plan without too much opposition. Palau turned out to be a fairly tough island but it is now mopped up and the resistance is nothing to speak of. Now the talk is of the big landings that are forthcoming on the Philippines and other places. The 6th Army has already left from Humboldt Bay for their destination and our latest latrinogram has it that four simultaneous invasions are coming off October, possibly at Sumar, Manila, Borneo, and Davao but they are just guesses. We will see, however, The war in Germany has slowed down at the borders of Germany. We will probably see a big battle there and then the end of the war. Everyone hopes for an early ending but it is all guesswork from hereon. They could collapse any day but may hold out into 1945 with luck. The Russians are fast mopping up in the Balkans and the Germans are taking a terrific beating from all sides and from the air too.
