Things here at Stoneman for about a week have been fine. The food is excellent. Morale here is high. We received our impregnated clothing for protection against gas attack today. It smells awful and I never hope to use it. Lev is gone to Fuico on my 24-hour pass. Hope he gets back in time for the boat. He is liable to be a day or two AWOL. Can't say that I blame him. We went over the training deck the past week. It is an imitation ship's deck that is as high as a regular ship deck (35 feet). Everyone climbs over it on rope ladders with full pack and steel helmet and down the other side. There are also lifeboats and liferafts complete with equipment for 25 men to be afloat for several weeks. We practice launching them and have lectures on the preparation and use of the equipment on these rafts. There is also lectures on what to do exactly if the ship is torpedoed and everyone is ready. Hope we never have to use or do any of the things we are practicing. We expect to leave Stoneman in a few days, probably Thursday. Everyone packed the "B" bag last night and they went to the boat at 7 in the morning this morning. Our address is now A.P.O. 12465-B. C/O Post Master - San Francisco.
Received my first letter from Mom written on the 7th, today is the 12th. One week ago today. Wired home for ten bucks last Thursday, got it Saturday. Wired June in a night letter Friday but as yet I haven't hear from anyone except Mom and Dalton Cannon. The Cards lost 1-4 to the yanks. Bill Dicky honored with keller on deck to win 2-0 in the final. "Spud" Chandler was the star pitcher and Mort Cooper the goat - I won about $12.00 from Gus on it but told him I would settle for five. Hope he pays up.
Did K.P. on Sunday. Weigh about 160 pounds and have a quarter of an inch beard. Am going to get a S.I. haircut. Hope to ship soon. We're getting restless and hope to hear from some girl or another right away.
Westphal, Macquire, Zinty, Roe (schoolboy) Kanney, Shanner, White, a mormon fellow Paul Glissineyer, Leo Wilkinson, Lucks, are just a few of the fellows on my shipment. Hope to be with them permanently. Our sense of humor keeps us alive.
